    The Charles University

    The Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, is the oldest University in Eastern Europe. The foundation of Charles University by King Charles IV was a fundamental impetus for the development of scientific thinking (although in the beginning it was not, of course, fully separated from philosophical and theological thinking). in 1348. It was the first university in Central Europe.

    LIGHTNING RODS

    Václav Divíšek Czech physicist, inventor and Roman Catholic priest
    Václav Prokop Diviš , Latin Procopius Divisch , German Prokop Diwisch or Divisch , real name Václav Divíšek ( March 26, 1698 Helvíkovice u Žamberka [1] – December 21, 1765 Přímětice u Znojma ), was a Czech Catholic priest , theologian , member of the Premonstratensian order, naturalist , healer , musician and inventor . He is best known as the inventor of the lightning rod (1750 – 1754). He built his “meteorological machine”, which functioned as a lightning conductor, earlier (1754) than the world-renowned inventor of the lightning conductor Benjamin Franklin (theoretical concept 1753 , built 1760 ). However, Diviš’s concept was different from Franklin’s, his lightning rod was mainly grounded, and therefore it worked better.

    Joseph Stepling a Czech Jesuist priest, physicist, astronomer, mathematician and meteorologist, was the first to observe that water can be even  in a liquid state at a temperature  below 0° C , so-called supercooled-water.

    FERDINAND PORSCHE

    Ferdinand Porsche was born in Vratislavice nad Nisou, Czech Republic (3 September 1875 – 30 January 1951) but he established himself mainly in Germany and, as a collaborator with the Nazis, he could not even return to Czech Republic after the war. Ferdinand Porsche was a car designer , best known for the construction of the popular “people’s car” ( Volkswagen ) later known as the VW Beetle . He is also the designer of several types of German armored vehicles.

    Steam vehicle

    Prague was the third place in the world where a motor vehicle transported the human passengers. The mechanic of the Royal Czech Technical Trade School, JOSEF BOZEK, built a steam-engine-powered four-wheel vehicle, which he exhibited in 1815 and 1817.

    SHIP’S PROPELLER

    The Czech-born inventor Josef Ressel, in 1826 applied for a patent for a NEVER-ENDING SCREW which can be used to drive ships both on sea and rivers.

    Emil Knight of Škoda

    Emil Knight of Škoda was a Czech technician, industrialist and large entrepreneur. He was the founder of the Škoda engineering factory in Pilsen (CZ), which was one of the largest European industrial conglomerates of the twentieth century, from which today’s Škoda Transportation and Škoda Auto subsequently emerged .

    Tatra

    A Czech vehicle manufacturer TATRA is the second oldest company in the world  producing cars with an unbroken history. Because of the way the Soviet Bloc-s planned economic system worked, carmakers were assigned roles by central government,. TATRA was assigned to build trucks, and SKODA passenger cars. While TATRA was an extremely competent truck maker, there were still plenty of engineers who wanted to continue development of their very radical and advanced rear-engine car designs.  So they did! In secret, they began to evolve the now quite dated 1930s TATRA T87 design, into a more modern, full-width body shape, and developed further the T87’s air-cooled V8 engine, using it in military trucks so they could prove the engine without reveling their secret project.

    One of the first mass producers of shoes in Europe, was founded by family Bata on 24 August 1894 in the Moravian town of ZLIN. In 1922 Tomas Bata has invented a psychological trick of BATA PRICES that end with -9 or -99.

    The Czech automobile manufacturer founded in 1895 as Laurin & Klement was acquired by Industrial conglomerate SKODA WORKS in 1925.

    The Czech physician and scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyne made a massive advance in criminology with his discovery that all human fingerprints are unique and could therefore be used as a form of identification.

    In the period between the Wars, about 100 automobile manufacturers were active in the Czech lands, but only eight of them were able to produce more than a 1000 vehicles – NW TATRA, SKODA, PRAGA, AERO, JAWA, WALTER, WIKOV and Z. VEHICLES.

    Probably everybody associates the name of BATA with shoes. However, in Czechoslovakia between the wars, this was far from the only activity of the BATA CORPORATION, which also commenced aeroplane production in 1934.

    Soft contact lenses

    A Czech, the chemist Otto Wichterle, invented the soft contact lenses in 1959, working mainly in field of macromolecular organic chemistry, among whose founders he was one. It is best known for its discoveries and inventions, which have led to a major improvement and worldwide expansion of soft contact lenses. These results were based on his original scientific work in the field of hydrogels. Otto Wichterle is also famous for the discovery of an artificial polyamide fibre – NYLON.
